Abstract

YouTube is a platform that can be used to learn English free, where there are so many channels of YouTube teachers that publish free weekly videos for everybody. Sometimes they do live classes and the students can choose a YouTube teacher that they feel a nice connection with (e.g YouTube teacher vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation, expression etc) . When the students feel a connection with that teacher then watching their lessons is going to be an enjoyable experience. Most of the channels add subtitles to their videos, YouTube automatically generates subtitles for those videos. So the students can follow and imitate the subtitles of the video. The researcher was aimed to know how are the students’ perception toward YouTube video in learning speaking skill at the ninth semester of English department in IAIN Parepare, this research was used quantitative approach with description-survey technique by using questionnaire in collecting data through five likert scale. The subjects were the students of English department. As a sample it was random sampling which were 60 students. The result indicated that more than half of the students perceive that visual factor is the most important aspect when they use YouTube video in learning speaking skill; it is proven that visual factor becomes the dominant aspect from the three aspects discussed with percentage 35%, followed with sense 33% and verbal 32%. These three factors become an important role in making perception toward YouTube, but most of the students have a learning style as visual learners in this research. The result of this research found that the students of the ninth semester in English department in IAIN Parepare perceive visual aspects as more important than others when they learn speaking on YouTube. It means that the students are more interested in learning by seeing the object. Therefore the writer can conclude that the students of English Department at the ninth semester perceive that YouTube video has a positive effect in developing their language skills, especially sepaking skill.
