Abstract

Self-esteem is a central construct in developmental, personality, and social psychology. Self-esteem also refers to individuals ‘perception or subjective appraisal of one own self-worth, one’s feeling of respect, ones’ feeling of shyness and worries and self-confidence and the extent to which the individual hold positive or negative views about self. Reading comprehension is an interactive process between readers, text and strategies this interactive process includes understanding, utilizing, and evaluating the important message that author trying to convey. The aims of this research was to investigate the correlation between self-esteem and English reading achievement. The purpose of this research was to investigate whether there is significant correlation between self-esteem and English reading achievement.. The design in this research was quantitative. The data of Research was taken from questionnaire and reading test. The sample of the reseach is XI class consist of 76 students. Analysis used are SPSS version 21 and persons’s product moment. Based on the data analysis, first, the result of this study indicated that students’ self-esteem at the second grade of SMA Negeri 4 Pare pare is 73.4%, high category, the second, students reading comprehension at the second grade of SMA Negeri 4 Pare pare is 80%, It showed that students ability in comprehending was in high category. finally, there was the correlation between students self-esteem and students reading comprehension at the second grade of SMA Negeri 4 Parepare. It was proved in accordance with the results of the questionnaires and score of the test about reading comprehension with significant value = 0.515 ≥ = 0.220 at a significant level of 5%, while the result was 28% and 72% was influenced by other variables which not observed in this study.
