Abstract

This study aims to investigate how English teachers at MAN 1 Kolaka Utara engage in ethical practices when using social media as a teaching medium in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classrooms. In the context of 21st-century education, social media has become an integral part of the learning process, enabling interactive opportunities between teachers and students. However, this engagement also presents ethical challenges that require further examination, particularly regarding professional boundaries, student privacy, and the delivery of content through digital platforms. This research employed a descriptive qualitative approach involving four teachers as participants. Data were collected through interviews, observations, and documentation, and were analyzed and categorized into four main themes: teachers’ ethical awareness, ethical content selection and sharing, the application of professional values in digital engagement, and the management of student interaction through social media. Each theme reflects the dynamics and variations in teachers’ responses to ethical concerns that arise in digital spaces. The findings reveal practices that illustrate teachers’ efforts to consider ethical aspects in the process of social media-based teaching. Nevertheless, the study also identifies several areas that require further attention, such as the need for clarity in digital boundaries and consistency in the use of instructional content. These findings highlight the importance of developing institutional guidelines and ongoing professional training to support teachers in fostering more ethically aware digital practices in the EFL classroom context.
