Abstract

English course for nursing students was considered essential as an alternative educational policy, considering that many students lacked sufficient English comprehension in the context of nursing. This research aimed to describe the educational policy of the English course as an English class for nursing students and to explore students’ responses to the English class at STIKES Datu Kamanre, Luwu Regency. This research employed a qualitative method with a case study approach to understand and analyze the perspectives, experiences, and practices related to the research focus. The data collection techniques included observation and primary data through interviews with 10 students, 1 English lecturer, and 1 Head of STIKES. The data analysis technique used data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The results of this research showed that the educational policy mandating English courses for nursing students at STIKES Datu Kamanre, Luwu Regency, as implemented by the Head of STIKES, was primarily aimed at enhancing students’ English language proficiency, particularly in the context of nursing and global healthcare services. Nursing students' proficiency in the English language—particularly in communication skills and nursing-specific vocabulary—demonstrated that the policy had been successful in equipping students with the necessary language skills required for professional nursing, especially in international and medical contexts. The institution ensured that students were better prepared for the demands of their future careers. Students’ responses to the English class at STIKES Datu Kamanre, Luwu Regency, showed positive feedback, with many expressing improvements in their confidence and vocabulary usage. Cognitive responses indicated progress in language comprehension, while affective responses revealed that students initially experienced anxiety but eventually came to appreciate and enjoy the learning process
