Abstract

This study aims to analyze the students' listening skill by using listening strategies. Listening is quite difficult from some factors like accent differences, unfamiliar vocabulary, having trouble in concentrating. To cope with this issue, students need to apply listening strategies to improve their listening skill. There are three strategies explain in this research, such as; metacognitive strategies, cognitive strategies, and socio�affective strategies. Therefore, the researcher wanted to know the students listening level after they joined the IELTS preparation program and the strategies they implemented to improve their listening skill. This research used a quantitative descriptive research method. The total sample were 10 members of the IELTS preparation program at IAIN Parepare. This research has duration of one month and a half. The research conducted analyzing students‟ test to find the students‟ listening level, and a questionnaire to analyze the student listening strategies. The study found that the students' listening scores before joining the IELTS preparation program were still poor, with an average of 4 (Limited User Level). After a month of intensive IELTS preparation, the students‟ score improved to 5 (Modest User Level) even 6,5 (Competent User Level), the highest achievement. Based on the questionnaire, the majority of students using cognitive strategy while listening, such as taking notes and memorizing material to help them answer the question. In improving listening skill it requires appropriate learning strategies to be applied. By applying the right strategy, it will be easier for the student to overcome their problem with listening.
