Abstract

Vocabulary mastery is essential for learning English because it includes four basic skills: speaking, reading, writing, and listening. By having adequate vocabulary mastery, students can communicate more effectively, understand the meaning and context of the text they read, produce clear and effective writing, and understand the meaning and context of the conversation they listen to. With adequate vocabulary mastery, students will experience competency in achieving competency in these skills, so speaking, reading, writing, and listening become more complex and compelling. This research focuses on using cartoon films, significantly "Dora the Explorer," to improve vocabulary mastery of fifth-grade students at SDN 17 Parepare. In addition, this research also aims to evaluate students' interest in this learning method, considering that high interest in learning often contributes to better learning outcomes and deeper involvement in the learning process. This research used a classroom action research method carried out in two cycles, each consisting of four stages: planning, action, observation and reflection. This research involved 22 fifth-grade students at SDN 17 Parepare. Data collection methods include observation, tests, and questionnaires. Data analysis uses qualitative and quantitative approaches to assess students' vocabulary mastery and interests. Qualitative data provides insight into student attitudes and engagement, while quantitative data measures improvement in vocabulary mastery through pre-tests and post-tests. The usage of the animated movie "Dora the Explorer" considerably improved fifth- grade students' command of English vocabulary, according to the findings. Although there were some early difficulties in the first cycle, the learning outcomes significantly improved in the second cycle. On the post-test, the student's average score rose from 60.23% on the pre- test to 71.14%. Students in cycle II received an average score of 93.64%. In addition, this teaching approach has a substantial degree of student engagement, as seen by the enthusiasm and enhanced participation shown throughout the learning process. The unique aspect of this study is how "Dora the Explorer" was creatively used to blend learning with enjoyment, resulting in notable gains in vocabulary comprehension and student engagement, particularly among primary schoolers.
