Abstract

Reading as a language skill play an important role in teaching English as a foreign language. Because teacher still use conventional methods in teaching reading, students’ ability to understand reading still seems to be unsatisfactory. So, teacher must explore and develop new strategies. One strategy in reading comprehension that can tringger students to achieve these goals is the SMART (Self-Monitoring Approach Reading and Thinking) strategy. This research develops the SMART strategy to increase the reading comprehension achievement of seventh grade students. This research uses a collaborative classroom action research design where researchers and teacher work together to develop appropriate SMART strategy procedures, design lesson plans, determine success criteria, carry out action, observe and reflect. Researchers show that the SMART strategy is successful increasing students’ motivation to be actively involved in the learning process. The purpose of this study was to improve students’ abilities with the SAMRT (Self-Monitoring Approach Reading and Thinking) on students’ reading comprehension. The results of this study are useful for teachers and students because they can obtain information about the learning methods used in English, especially reading comprehension. This study used a pre-experimental research design with pre-test, treatment, and post-test, research subjects were students of class VII UPT SMP Negeri 7 Pinrang, totaling 23 students. Sampling was done by cluster random sampling. The results of the study show that the SMART learning method can improve students’ reading comprehension skill in class VII UPT SMP Negeri 7 Pinrang. This is indicated by the average students’post-test (78.70) which is greater than the post-test (62.17). In fact, for the significant level (0,05) and df = 44, the t-table value is 2.02, while the t-test value is -3.57. This means that the t-test value is higher than the t-table value (-3.57 > 2.02). Thus,it can be concluded that students’ reading comprehension significantly better after receiving treatment. There for, the Hypothesis (Ho) is rejected and the Hypothesis (Ha) is accepted.
