Abstract

The lack of vocabulary among students is a concerning issue, as it leads to difficulties in understanding English lessons. This study aims to determine whether the Rosetta Stone application can improve vocabulary mastery among second-grade students at SMP Negeri 12 Parepare and to identify significant differences in students' vocabulary mastery before and after using the application. The Rosetta Stone application facilitates vocabulary acquisition by engaging students in learning new words effectively. It helps students efficiently memorize new vocabulary and recall previously learned words with ease. In this study, a pre-experimental design was used, involving one group of students participating in pre-test, treatment, and post-test. The population was students of SMP Negeri 12 Parepare with a sample size of 27 students. Data was collected using pre-test and post-test and then processed using Microsoft Excel 365. The success of the treatment was assessed by analyzing the difference in pre-test and post-test scores, by comparing the t-test and t-table. The results of this study show that the Rosetta Stone application is able to improve students' vocabulary mastery significantly. Using the t-test formula resulted in a t-value of 11.068, which far exceeds the t-table value of 3.975. This shows a significant difference between vocabulary teaching before and after using the Rosetta Stone application, proving the effectiveness of the application in improving students' vocabulary mastery, the null hypothesis (HO) is rejected and the alternative hypothesis (HI) is accepted.
