Abstract

Error analysis is a theory developed by the researchers to dig and acknowledge the learners’ problems in learning second language. Spelling is word forming consisting of acceptable ordered letters. Capitalization is used to distinguish between proper nouns and common nouns and to make the readers focus on specific things that the writer wants to tell in their writing. Punctuation marks are symbols or signs which used in writings to tell the readers how the sentences are organized and how to read. The purpose of this research was to analyze the types of students’ errors are encountered in writing descriptive text, and the difference between the students’ error analysis of English Education Program and Non-English Education Program. This research took the members of Lintasan Imajinasi Bahasa Mahasiwa (LIBAM) with 30 students as participants. This research was classified as descriptive qualitative research, where the instrument in this research was writing descriptive text. The steps of error analysis were collection, identification, description, explanation, and evaluation of errors. From the result, it could be seen that errors committed by students of English Education Program and Non-English Education Program were spelling, capitalization, and punctuation marks. The massive errors are found in capitalization consists of 186 errors, while the spelling in the second error consists of 117 errors and punctuation marks consists of 76 errors. The difference between the total errors of students’ English Education Program are lower instead of students’ Non-English Education Program. Due to the result of this research, the students should be more careful and pay more attention to the mechanic material when they write a text and it is suggested to the student to make peer feedback and proof-reading in the next writing text.
