Abstract

This research aims to explore the self-concept of students in the English Education Study Program at IAIN Parepare, particularly in their preparation to become professional teachers. The study investigates the differences in self-concept among students based on their academic year (semester 2–4 versus 6–8) and their English language proficiency. It also examines the combined influence of these two factors on the development of self-concept, which encompasses self-image, self- worth, and the ideal self, essential psychological dimensions shaping prospective teachers’ identity and competence. Using a quantitative research approach with a survey model, data were collected from 134 students through a Likert-scale-based questionnaire. The instrument measured three dimensions of self-concept, and the responses were analyzed using descriptive statistics and ANOVA tests. The findings indicate that students in higher semesters tend to have a more developed and stable self-concept compared to those in lower semesters. Additionally, students with higher English proficiency showed stronger self-perceptions in teaching readiness, confidence, and future professional aspirations. The study concludes that both academic progression and language proficiency significantly influence the formation of self-concept among prospective English teachers. Students in later semesters who possess higher language competence generally demonstrate a more positive self-concept, which supports their professional growth and readiness. These results highlight the need for targeted support to provide opportunities for students to feel free and comfromtable speaking to develop self-concept in early semesters to foster self-confidence and professional identity from the outset of teacher education.
