Abstract

The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into communication and media systems has transformed how information, meaning, and moral responsibility are produced and distributed. This study reinterprets Islamic communication ethics through a normative philosophical approach to address the ethical challenges of AI-driven media. Drawing upon classical Islamic moral philosophy, particularly the works of al-Ghazali and Ibn Miskawayh, as well as contemporary scholars such as Elmahjub, Ghaly, and Raquib, this paper reconstructs five foundational principles of Islamic communication ethics: truthfulness (ṣidq), trustworthiness (amānah), justice (‘adālah), wisdom (ḥikmah), and public welfare (maṣlaḥah). The analysis demonstrates that these principles form a coherent moral ontology grounded in tawḥīd (divine unity) and maqāṣid al-sharī‘ah (the higher objectives of Islamic law). Reinterpreted for the age of AI, ṣidq corresponds to algorithmic transparency and epistemic authenticity, amānah to data stewardship and accountability, ‘adālah to fairness and equilibrium in algorithmic decision-making, ḥikmah to human oversight and prudence in automated communication, and maṣlaḥah to teleological orientation toward the common good. The findings suggest that Islamic communication ethics offers a theocentric alternative to dominant secular models of AI ethics, which often emphasize procedural fairness without transcendental grounding. By uniting revelation and reason, Islam provides a moral teleology that situates technological innovation within divine accountability. The study proposes a reconstructed framework of Islamic AI Communication Ethics (IACE) integrating ontological unity, normative virtue, and practical accountability. This framework contributes to global ethical pluralism and provides actionable principles for designing and governing AI-mediated communication systems that are just, trustworthy, and spiritually grounded.
