Abstract

Reading as receptive skill has important part in English. Reading is a set of skill that involves making sense and deriving meaning from the printed word. It does not only produce the sounds of the word but at the same time be able to understand the contents of the reading text. It also helps students to build their vocabulary, improves students for understand the written text. Through reading, the reader can get many information and knowledge because reading has a deriving process that make the reader easy to get the idea. Without reading, there is very impossible for the people can got many information and knowledge. The research belongs to Pre-Experimental design with one group pre-test and post-test. The instrument of the research was reading test consist of 20 numbers. The population of the research was the students of the Second year at SMPN 5 Parepare. The research was conducted in five meetings where one meeting for pre-test, three metings for treatment, and one meeting for post-test. The sample of the research was took by using purposive sampling technique at class VIII₁ of SMPN 5Parepare which consists of 18 students. The researcher used descriptive quantitative technique to analyze the result of pre-test and post-test. Based on statistical analysis showed that the students mean score of pre-test was 63,33 and their score of post-test was 72,77, in which the gain amounted 9,44. It means that the students reading comprehension was improved before and after taught by the use of Listen-Read-Discuss (LRD) strategy. Then the rage percentage in post- test was higher than the rate percentage in pre-test in teaching reading, and t-test was greater than value of t-table (3,01 >1,740). The result of the research proved that by the application of Listen-Read-Discuss (LRD) strategy were effective to be used in teaching the students reading comprehension and it means that null hypothesis is rejected and alternative hypothesis is accepted. It can be conclued that Listen-Read- Discuss (LRD) strategy be used to improve students reading comprehension significantly.
