Abstract

Srywulan Handayani. The Influence Of Using The Falou Application On Students Speaking Ability at SMPN 1 Parepare (Supervised by. Abdul Haris Sunubi) This research investigates the influence of using the Falou application on the speaking ability of eighth-grade students at SMPN 1 Parepare. The study was conducted based on the problems found in the classroom, where many students were still shy, lacked confidence, and had limited vocabulary, weak grammar, and frequent mispronunciation, which led to low speaking performance. Therefore, the main objective of this research was to find out whether the use of the Falou application could significantly improve students’ speaking ability in this context. This research employed a pre-experimental design with one group using a pre-test and post-test within a quantitative approach. The sample consisted of 32 students of class VIII-1 at SMPN 1 Parepare selected through purposive sampling. The instrument of the research was a speaking test in the form of giving instruction, in which students responded orally to prompts such as introducing themselves, answering simple questions, ordering food and drinks, and buying new things. Students’ speaking performance was assessed using Brown’s analytical scoring rubric, covering pronunciation, fluency, vocabulary, grammar, and comprehension. The data were collected through pre-test, a series of treatment meetings using Falou, and post-test, and were analyzed using descriptive statistics and a paired sample t-test to see the improvement and significance of the results. The findings showed that the students’ speaking ability improved after being taught using the Falou application. The mean score increased from 36.37 in the pre-test to 67.50 in the post-test, indicating a substantial improvement in their speaking performance. The result of the paired sample t-test showed that the t-count value (t = –14.985) with df = 31 and Sig. (2-tailed) = 0.000 was higher in absolute value than the t-table (2.040) and lower than 0.05, which means that there was a significant difference between the pre-test and post-test scores. Therefore, the use of the Falou application had a positive and significant influence on the speaking ability of eighth-grade students at SMPN 1 Parepare.
