Abstract
FIRMANSYAH PUTRA. The Effect of Modifying English Song Lyrics Technique on Students' Vocabulary Mastery at MAN Pinrang (Supervised by Munawir). Limited vocabulary mastery causes students to experience difficulties in understanding texts and using English appropriately. Therefore, this study aimed to determine whether the Modifying English Song Lyrics Technique had a significant effect on students' vocabulary mastery at MAN Pinrang and to identify the improvement in their vocabulary mastery after the implementation of the technique. This study employed a quantitative approach with a pre-experimental one-group pre-test and post-test design. The sample consisted of 20 students selected through purposive sampling. The data were collected through pre-test, treatment, and post-test using a multiple-choice vocabulary test. During the treatment, the students modified the lyrics of Just the Way You Are based on environmental themes and recorded themselves singing with their personalized melodies and lyrics, which were shared collaboratively through WhatsApp Group discussions. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and inferential statistics through a paired sample t-test based on Webb and Nation's theory of vocabulary mastery. The findings revealed that the mean score of the pre-test was 47.5 (poor category), while the mean score of the post-test increased to 76 (good category), representing a 60% improvement. The paired sample t-test showed that the significance value (Sig. 2-tailed) was .000 < 0.05, with a t-value of -31.81, indicating that the null hypothesis was rejected and the alternative hypothesis was accepted. Additionally, 90% of students achieved Good or Very Good categories in the post-test, compared to only 15% in the pre-test, and all four vocabulary indicators (word meaning, synonyms, antonyms, and vocabulary comprehension) demonstrated significant improvement. Therefore, the Modifying English Song Lyrics Technique had a significant effect on students' vocabulary mastery at MAN Pinrang..
