Abstract

MUHAMMAD AS'AD AMIR JAYA. The Effectiveness of YouGlish in Improving Pronunciation Accuracy Among Grade X Students at SMA Negeri 7 Pinrang. (Supervised by Dr. Abdul Haris Sunubi, S.S., M.Pd.) This research aimed to investigate whether the use of YouGlish was effective in improving pronunciation accuracy among Grade X students at SMA Negeri 7 Pinrang. The study employed a quantitative approach with a pre-experimental one-group pretest-posttest design, involving 35 students of class X.4 selected through purposive sampling. Students' pronunciation accuracy was measured across four aspects: vowel sounds, consonant sounds, word stress, and intonation. Data were collected through an oral pronunciation pre-test and post-test administered before and after the implementation of YouGlish as a treatment. The pre-test was conducted to identify students' initial pronunciation accuracy, while the post-test was administered after four treatment sessions to measure any improvement. The scoring rubric assessed each of the four pronunciation aspects on a four-point scale, with a maximum raw score of 16 converted to a final score on a 0–100 scale. The data were then analyzed using a paired sample t-test to determine whether the difference between the pre-test and post-test mean scores was statistically significant. The results showed that the mean score increased from 42.14 in the pre-test, classified as "Poor," to 68.21 in the post-test, classified as "Fair," with t(34) = -16.619 and p < .001. The findings confirm that YouGlish, as a corpus-based digital pronunciation tool, is effective in improving students' pronunciation accuracy, particularly in segmental features, and can serve as a valuable medium for providing authentic pronunciation input in EFL classrooms.
