Abstract

Sulfitriani Dwi Anugrah. A Comparison of Task Design And Language Complexity Between Indonesian And International Efl Textbooks. (Supervised by Dr. Magdahalena, M.Hum). This study investigates task design, communicative demand, cognitive demand, and language complexity in three English textbooks: Bahasa Inggris: Work in Progress SMA/SMK/MA Kelas X, Cambridge English Empower B1, and Oxford Discover Future 2. Using a mixed-methods approach, the research combines qualitative content analysis and quantitative descriptive analysis grounded in Task-Based Language Teaching, the Revised Bloom’s Taxonomy, and CEFR descriptors. The analysis focuses on task types, skill focus, communicative orientation, curriculum alignment, and lexical, syntactic, and discourse complexity. The findings show clear differences among the textbooks. Oxford Discover Future 2 demonstrates the strongest support for communicative, inquiry-based, and higher-order learning. Cambridge English Empower B1 provides well-scaffolded tasks emphasizing fluency and accuracy but offers limited higher-order thinking opportunities. Work in Progress aligns conceptually with Kurikulum Merdeka yet includes fewer problem-solving and open-ended tasks. Overall, the study highlights areas for improving Indonesian English textbooks to better support communicative competence and higher-order thinking.
