Abstract

SRI RAHAYU PUTRI RULI, Improving Students’ Writing Ability: Composing English Words Correctly by Using Duolingo Application at SMP Negeri 5 Parepare (Supervised by Arqam and Munawir) The students’ ability in composing English words correctly was still low because of limited vocabulary and monotonous learning without interactive feedback. Although Duolingo offers spaced repetition and instant feedback, its effectiveness in improving accuracy in composing English words has not been specifically examined. Therefore this study aimed to determine the effectiveness of Duolingo in improving writing students’ writing ability especially in composing English words This quasi-experimental study with pre-test and post-test involved 7th grade students at SMP Negeri 5 Parepare. Class E1used Duolingo with high-intensity, class E2 with low intensity and the control class used conventional methods The results indicate that class E1 obtained an N-gain of 0.55, class E2 0.36 and control class 0.13. It can be concluded that Duolingo was effective in improving students’ ability especially in composing English words and higher intensity of use led to better improvement. The findings are consistent with Ebbinghaus’s Spaced Repetition Theory
