Abstract

This study aims to see the improvement of implementing the Critical Incident in teaching speaking at the second year students of MAN 1 Mamuju. The design of this study isa quantitative method using quasi-experimental design (nonequivalent control group) with two groups, namely experimental group and control group. The population of this study is the second year students of MAN 1 Mamuju which consists of five classes where the total number is 165 students. The sampling process of this research is purposive sampling technique. The researcher took one class, XI MIA1 which divided into two groups, the first group was XI MIA 1(A) as experimental group consisted of 35 students and the second group was XI MIA 2(B) as control group consisted of 31 students. The data was collected through pretest and posttest. It aims to know whether the Critical Incident method can improve students’ speaking skill then implementing discussion method. The result of this research shows that students’ speaking skill significantly improves. Based on the calculation, the result of the dataanalysis by using t-test showed the value of ttest(to) was higher than ttable(tt), to > tt= 15.22>1.66901, in significantdegree of 0.05 (5%). As the statistical hypothesesshows, if ttest(to) >ttable(tt) in significant degree of 0.05 (5%), it means that thealternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted and the null hypothesis (Ho) is rejected. In conclusion, crtical incident method is able to improve the students’ speaking skill.
