Abstract

Students are learners who are currently pursuing the world of education in certain level for a certain amount of time. In university context, the students have an obligation to complete a Skripsi to hold an academic degree. Many students got the difficulties build up an idea in written form in a Skripsi. Skripsi is an academic research requires related theories based on the research needs. They should quote or rephrase the source in a practical way. Few ways had been taught in previous semester. However, most students prefer to quote something without paying attention to the ethics of writing so that there is a case called plagiarism which is an academic crime. This research applied the theory purposed by Kaharuddin who suggest there stages of paraphrase, namely replacing word with the most relevant synonym, changing lexical structure and changing sentence structure. The purpose of the research to find out the students’ difficulties to write a Skripsi by using paraphrase and to find out how the students overcome their difficulties in using paraphrase to complete a Skripsi in English Department at IAIN Parepare. The research applied a descriptive case study as a part of qualitative approach. The respondents or the key informants were 27 students of English Department who is in the ninth semester. This research used snowball sampling technique. The researcher used an interview activity in directly and indirectly as the instrument of this research. The result of the research can be useful for the lecturers, students and other researchers. The lecturers can know what the students’ difficulties in using paraphrase to complete a skripsi. Therefore, it will be known what kind the difficulties and the way to overcome it to avoid plagiarism in academic world. The result of this research indicated that, there were 4 main factors from the difficulties in using paraphrase to complete a skripsi namely synonym, paraphrase pattern, grammatical and other factors. There were 11 from 27 students got the difficulties in synonym factor, there were 16 from 27 students got the difficulties in paraphrase pattern, there were 10 from 27 students got the difficulties in grammatical and almost all the students had other factors such as difficulties building ideas, interpreting a reading, the sentences in a paragraph were too long and the language used was high and the lecturers’ explanation were not clear. Every student had their own difficulties and the solution to overcome the difficulties. It was found such as catching the main point, finding synonym, asking others and using application.
